Paratransit

Paratransit is a specialized, demand-responsive transportation service designed for individuals with disabilities or impairments who are unable to use standard public transit systems, such as fixed-route buses or trains, due to physical, cognitive, or other limitations. Typically provided by public transit agencies, paratransit offers curb-to-curb or door-to-door rides, often in accessible vans or vehicles equipped with lifts or ramps, to ensure mobility for eligible passengers. In the U.S., it’s mandated under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, requiring service within a certain radius (usually ¾ mile) of fixed routes, during similar hours. Eligibility often requires certification, such as a medical or professional assessment, and services may be scheduled in advance.
