Deaf Action Center

Deaf Action Center (DAC) empowers deaf and hard of hearing individuals in North Texas through advocacy, communication, and empowerment, promoting education, economic security, and health.

Services:

  • Advocacy: Coordinates with agencies to ensure accessible services for deaf and hard of hearing individuals, including housing and legal support.
  • Housing Navigation: Assists in securing safe, affordable housing, funded partly by the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs.
  • Senior Citizens Program: Offers social activities, transportation, meals, and wellness checks for deaf and hard of hearing seniors, supported by Dallas County Health and Human Services.
  • Interpreting Services: Provides certified sign language interpreters, video remote interpreting (VRI), and Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) for various settings.
  • American Sign Language (ASL) Classes: In-person and virtual classes to teach ASL and foster community engagement.

Caliber Center for Communications

Callier Center for Communication Disorders

The Callier Center is a clinical and research facility at the University of Texas at Dallas, providing evaluation, treatment, and early education for children and adults with speech, language, and hearing disorders.

  • Services:
    • Clinical Evaluations and Treatments: Assessments and therapy for speech, language, and communication issues, including articulation, stuttering, autism-related challenges, and cognitive-communication impairments.
    • Audiology Services: Hearing tests, hearing aid fittings, cochlear implant support, tinnitus management, and vestibular rehabilitation for all ages.
    • Child Development Programs: Nationally accredited early education for infants to kindergarten, including specialized programs for deaf and language-impaired children.
    • Specialized Programs: Virtual Communication Alliance (free for Texas residents with brain injuries), Young Adult Social Communication Group for ages 18-30 with autism, and accent modification.

Cost: Accepts many insurance plans; offers sliding scale fees for qualifying patients.

Education Service Center Region 10 (ESC Region 10)  | Deaf/Hard of Hearing

A nonprofit education service center supporting North Texas school districts with training and resources, including special education programs for deaf students with disabilities.

  • Regional Day School Program for the Deaf (RDSPD): Provides resources, training, and technical support for educators serving deaf and hard of hearing students, ensuring access to ASL, interpreters, and assistive listening devices in Metrocrest schools.
  • Special Education Training: Workshops on Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and 504 Plans to accommodate deaf students’ communication and learning needs, addressing disability-related challenges.
  • Special Education Information Center (SPEDTex): Offers resources and interactive tools for parents and educators to improve partnerships and support deaf students with disabilities.
  • Technical Assistance: Guides schools on implementing accommodations like captioning, FM systems, or visual aids for deaf students in classroom settings.
